Estrogenic Herbs and Hormone Balance

Phytoestrogens are both the heroes and the villain of the wellness world.  Half of the wellness world claiming they are anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory and the other half saying they cause estrogen dominance and promote cancer cells.

So, which one is true?

Well, they both are, kind of.  Let’s clear some things up, starting at the beginning:

Phytoestrogens are plant compounds that interact with the body’s estrogen receptors. Their structure resembles estrogen, but their effects depend entirely on which receptors they bind to and how the body responds.

The body has two main types of estrogen receptors: ER-α (alpha) and ER-β (beta).

Alpha receptors (ER-α) are concentrated in reproductive tissues like the uterus and breasts, as well as in the liver. When activated too frequently or too strongly, this receptor promotes growth in these tissues, leading to symptoms of estrogen dominance, such as breast cysts, fibroids, and heavy periods.

Beta receptors (ER-β) are found in the brain, bones, cardiovascular system, immune system, and skin. Activation of ER-β supports mental clarity, bone density, skin integrity, immune resilience, and balanced cell turnover. It also moderates the activity of ER-α, helping to regulate and calm growth signals in more sensitive tissues.

Estradiol, the most common form of estrogen that the body makes, binds to both alpha and beta receptors indifferently.

Xenoestrogens, the “bad estrogen” found in BPA plastics, pesticides, and fragrance, bind to—you guessed it—alpha receptors.

What about phytoestrogens?  They actually prefer the beta receptors.

This means that increasing phytoestrogens may actually help *reduce* symptoms of estrogen dominance!

Some of our Favorite Phytoestrogenic Herbs and Their Receptor Activity

  • Red Clover – Binds Beta. Supports skin, mood, menstruation, and menopausal transitions.
  • Black Cohosh – Modulates estrogen receptor activity by increasing beta receptor activity. Useful for hot flashes, nervous tension, and uterine discomfort.
  • Chamomile – Binds Beta. Calming to the nervous system, anti-inflammatory, and supportive for digestion and skin.
  • Licorice Root – Binds Beta. Supports adrenal health, hormonal rhythms, and inflammatory modulation.  Find it in our Detox & Chill Herbal Coffee.
  • Hops – Binds both ER-α and ER-β, depending on dose and processing. Estrogenic at higher doses (beer); calming and nervine at lower ones (tinctures), more on this below.
  • Fermented Soy – Binds Beta. Beneficial for bone density, cognitive health, and cardiovascular function.
  • Reishi – Modulates beta estrogen receptor activity. Supports immune balance, skin clarity, and liver function.  Find it in many of our products!
  • Dong Quai – Indirect modulation of estrogen through beta receptor activity. Supports blood flow, uterine tone, and recovery from fatigue.  Find it on our Crowning Glory Tincture

Final answer?

Herbs containing phytoestrogens interact with the body through beta receptor pathways, providing widespread support for hormonal balance, nervous system regulation, detoxification, and tissue integrity.

They do so WITHOUT overstimulating sensitive tissues or promoting estrogen dominance.

Phytoestrogens Myths and FAQs

1.  Why do herbs that bind beta help in menopause if they don’t increase estrogen?

During menopause, estrogen levels decline. This affects multiple tissues—not just the reproductive organs, but also the brain, bones, and skin. Since ER-β is highly expressed in those areas, phytoestrogens that bind to ER-β help relieve hot flashes, support bone strength, improve mood, and reduce cognitive fog. They also promote elasticity and hydration in the skin.

Rather than pushing estrogen levels higher, these herbs provide targeted support where estrogen is no longer as active. They also assist the body in metabolizing and clearing old estrogen, improving the overall hormonal terrain.

2. Are phytoestrogens still bad for men?

No!  Contrary to popular belief, phytoestrogens from herbs do not reduce testosterone levels. They actually help protect testosterone levels by reducing the activity of harmful estrogen by competing with environmental xenoestrogens that bind aggressively to ER-α and disrupt hormonal health.  This makes them relevant for prostate health, fertility, metabolic resilience, and mental clarity in men.

3. What about when herbs bind to both receptors?

Some plant compounds, like 8-prenylnaringenin in hops, bind to both ER-α and ER-β.   While this may seem concerning at first, the big thing to keep in mind is that while they may bind to both, phytoestrogens prefer beta receptors.  This means that it will still produce a modulating effect versus increasing.  Think of it like a dimmer switch versus an on/off switch.

 4. Why does beer cause estrogenic effects in men, if hops is fine?

Beer, which contains hops and alcohol, introduces hop’s primary estrogenic constituent into the body in high volumes and over extended periods. Alcohol itself suppresses testosterone and slows liver detoxification, which can increase the impact of any estrogenic activity. This combination can contribute to gynecomastia and other signs of hormonal imbalance in men.

Herbal use of hops, such as in teas or tinctures, delivers a much smaller and more controlled amount of phytoestrogen and is not associated with the same effects. In these forms, hops support the nervous system, improve sleep, and act as a bitter digestive aid.

Remember, herbs always contain the vital intelligence of nature to promote balance and harmony in the body.  Their isolated constituents may be exploited and create disharmony, but when you use the whole plant version, you can be assured that the herbs are working in harmony with your body to modulate it and support your health on a higher level.
